October 31, 2018
Day 656 of 1461 days

Dear Co-defendants –

DOWN TO THE WIRE

We are, as the saying goes, five days and a wake-up from mid-term elections. Already, though, 21% of Oregon voters have cast ballots, compared to 14% at this point in the last primary election. Whether the resulting wave will be blue or purple lies within our power. If you have not yet voted, stop reading this, and go do it immediately. Be sure that all voting members of your family have cast ballots. Don’t be shy about asking like-minded friends and acquaintances if they have voted. This is the most portentous election that, we hope, we will ever see in this country. If there is to be a blue wave, you are the wave.

We have one final weekend for canvassing, going door-to-door asking people if they have voted. If you are a neighborhood leader, make one final push to get your selected group close to 100% participation in democracy. Canvassing remains the most effective way of getting out the vote, surpassing all other avenues – postcards, phone calls, texts.

Democracy practiced face-to-face yields the best results. Go for it.

AFTER THE ELECTION

Whichever way the election goes, even if it’s overwhelmingly blue, this is but a mid-term election. Trump stays in as president no matter how loudly we protest, how powerful our wave. So, we have to take a few days off, then regroup, and keep the resistance growing and going.

And, even if we do win one or more legislative chambers, we need to remember that we are dealing with a gangster administration that possesses little respect for the law. The administration may just ignore congressional subpoenas, may fail o appear at hearings, may thumb its nose at a Democratic congress exercising its constitutional powers. We in the progressive movement will need to keep our shoulders to the political wheel. There will be little cause for rest!

CHAPTER MEETINGS AND ELECTION NIGHT PARTY

Our club meeting for November will be moved to Tuesday, November 6th, same place, same time. But this is a celebratory meeting. Bring a pot-luck dish for all to share. The club will provide wine and softer-drinks for all comers, as well as plastic ware and disposable dishes.

Anticipating the need to kick back a bit to celebrate the holidays, the December meeting is cancelled and we well get set to ’fight the old fight’ again with a New Year’s January  meeting on Wednesday, January 9, 2019.

MONTHLY MEETING

The next official meeting is set for Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at 1750 NW 131st Ave, 97229.   Doors open at 6:30PM and the meeting starts promptly at 7:30 PM.  Refreshments, both adult and juvenile. will be provided along with a few tasty snacks.

L’audace, encore l’audace, et toujours l’audace!

Thank you.
