Resistance Letter #60
January 8, 2019
Day 754 of 1461 days

Dear Co-defendants –

Emphasis on State Legislature

Despite the fatal attraction of the circus maximus going on in Washington, we will avert our eyes. There will be occasions when we need to take some action at the federal level, but mostly we will focus on the legislature with some resources listed below. The voters have given Oregon a Democratic governor and a super majority (enough members to take action on both taxes and spending). With a super majority, it will take some restraint to keep the legislatures from going overboard: so far, Tina Kotek (House) and Peter Courtney (Senate) have been keeping their heads on target. There will likely be some bill passed on carbon emission; Kate Brown has put her weight behind a carbon cap-and-trade this year and it might well be passed. California legislated a cap-and-trade bill a few years back, and it doesn’t seem to have ruined that state’s economy! If adopted, this would be a very significant move towards taming global climate change.

Mitch Greenlick to Retire

Our representative in the Oregon House is Mitch Greenlick, and, after 18 years representing us admirably,  he has announced his intention to retire; this will be his last session and, at age 83, it seems like a reasonable time for his departure. He has represented District 33 for 17 years, and currently chairs the Health Care Committee among others. He is very active on all health matters, working to get some form of single payer system passed and, recently, to remove the philosophical exemption from the measles/mump vaccine. Quixotically, he wants to see all tobacco products banned with severe penalties for use! Not likely to happen, but we applaud his intent.

The question then is who is going to replace Mitch on the ballot in 2020? This chapter has quite a few members who could take this challenge and represent us as well as Mitch has. Any hand raised out there?

Bonamici Tuesdays

Along with a few other progressive groups in the area, Hillsboro Indivisible and Beaverton Indivisible among them, we will plan on meeting with Bonamici and/or her staff, at her office in the Beaverton City Hall by the Round. Bring your questions, demands and signs to make this as effective as possible. Bonamici is a friend of ours and she has just been named to a green-energy oversight committee. The meetings are at twelve noon on second Tuesday of each month – Mar 12, Apr 9, May 14, June 11 and July 9 for a start.

Neighborhood Leaders

Washington County had a very vigorous and effective get-out-the-vote campaign last year, stressing neighbor-to-neighbor contacts to encourage voting. Remarkably, voting overall hovered around 60% participation and, with Neighborhood Leader contacts, it pushed response close to 90% . This is a remarkable jump and we plan on continuing it in 2020. Indivisible National has a VAN listing of all voters and we will be using that in conjunction with Washington County Democrats.

Legislature Goings-on

There are a bewildering number of computer apps available to keep track of The Oregon Legislature Here are a few of them:

State Legislative Calendar – https://www.indivisibleor.org/events/or-state-leg/This URL gets you to a calendar of action days for organizations for causes such as Carbon Reduction, Tenant’s Rights, 1000 Friends, Land Use, etc.

Actions Page – https://www.indivisibleor.org/actions/This URL gets you to a specific set of actions needed with all the information necessary to make those calls and meetings.

Legislative Actions – https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1LbRsABs9kqPMo8fm8Hf2Q7iEBFyK4iRl . This tortuously complicated URL gets you to a huge amount of information about the legislature – committee assignments and meeting dates, votes, research, etc.

Meeting Speakers

District Attorney Kevin Barton will be the featured speaker at our next meeting on March 4th, The County Attorney General is responsible for large policy areas – hiring, investigating, charging, alternative sentencing, etc. When we talked with Attorney Barton before the campaign he had a large number of areas which he recognized needed reforms.  Next month we will get a chance to hear him talk about these things and a q&a will follow his talk.

January 8, 2019
Day 719  of 1461 days

Dear Co-defendants –

ALIVE AGAIN!!!

Indivisible Cedar Mill took a righteous break over the holidays with no December meeting. Satisfied that we had done all that we planned, a holiday break seemed in order. Basking in our electoral wins (but still not happy with Walden!!!) , we put off new activity until January.

And January is here. Our first meeting of 2019 is set for next Wednesday, the 9th of January at 1750 NW 131st Ave, PDX OR 97229, 1830 hours. Attend yourself, and bring a like-minded fiend if you can. Recruiting new members will be a priority for us over the next year.

AREAS OF INTEREST AND ACTIVITY FOR 2019

Several of us sat down last week over a cup of coffee and scoped out areas where we could be active next year. The list is large, and we can’t do them all, but it gives us some opportunity for choices. Indivisible 2.0 from national intends to make this an active year on the national level. While we don’t argue that we have to keep an eye on Washington affairs, we in ICM will be more parochial and pay attention more to state and local issues.

Nationally, we will support progressives in any special elections that occur, support legitimate investigations of things Trumpian, and meet with Bonamici or her staff regularly. Jeff Merkley is up for re-election in 2020, so we will make a special effort to attend his town halls and speak when we have the opportunity.

On a state level, we have yet to see what will appear on the legislative calendar, but we will support the National Popular Vote in any way we can, and will be active on any action on redistricting. We will be making several trips to Salem to lobby for progressive issues; this session the Democrats have a super-majority in both houses and we should make progress there! Secretary of State Richardson has announced that he will run again, despite having brain cancer. He is now working out of his Central Point home; and, yes, we hope that he can beat the disease, but the office is too important to not make a huge effort there for 2020.

Locally, we have yet to see what issues of importance will be dealt with. We have connections with Pam Treece, Kathy Harrington and Kevin Barton. We will be discussing issues with these worthies, and also schedule them for speaking at one of our meetings.

Finally, on the really local level, we will support the Neighborhood Leader Project. That effort led to very real increases in voter participation last year. Karyn will expound on our accomplishments there, but they are very significant!

INDIVISIBLE CEDAR MILL

We all deserve a hearty pat on the back for our contributions to this mid-term election. We sent out over 5,000 postcards, knocked on innumerable doors, financially supported our candidates, attended town halls, marched in lots of protests and vigorously worked to register and Get Out the Vote. We had no slackers. Members who were initially timid about canvassing put on their boots and dutifully did the job. It’s safe to say that every house in Terra Linda was canvassed, and many more outside our neighborhood. A good and satisfying job! We are all now experienced activists and ready for the next job.

 MONTHLY MEETING

The next official meeting is set for Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at 1750 NW 131st Ave, 97229.   Doors open at 6:30PM and the meeting starts promptly at 7:30 PM.  Refreshments, both adult and juvenile. will be provided along with a few tasty snacks.

We will be discussing changing the meeting dates to either the second Monday or Tuesday of the month. We had initially planned on Monday nights, but got some push-back, so we will poll the group on this.

L’audace, encore l’audace, et toujours l’audace!

Thank you.

Resistance Letter #58A
November 7, 2018
Day 663 of 1461 days

Dear Co-defendants –

NO, WE AREN’T DEAD YET!!!!

Despite our righteous victory yesterday, we know…yes, we know..that that Trump regime is determined to stymie the House of Representatives and hold Trump above the law and the constitution

Tomorrow, at 5PM, we , along with MoveOn.org, are swarming at Murray and Cornell by Safeway at 5:PM. It’ll be dark, so bring flashlights so we can see and be seen. We are saying with this demonstration that NOBODY IS ABOVE THE LAW and that, despite our winning yesterday, we have not gone to sleep and look forward to continuing the fight until we win. No Surrender!

THE ELECTION

Yes, Virginia, we did all right yesterday. In Oregon we pretty much had a clean sweep, keeping Brown as governor and furnishing her with a super-majority in both houses of the legislature. For Washington County, Kathy Harrington beat Bob Terry handily to be the next Commission Chair. Unfortunately, we still have Greg Walden to kick around, and we will do that, but we do have four progressive Democrats in the House.

Nationally, we took the House and have Nancy Pelosi in charge, at least for a while. The Senate went to the Republicans with our losses of Smyrna, Bredesen, Heitkamp, Donnely and others. We had an uphill climb with the senate, since 27 out of 36 contested seats were all Democratic.  Democrats took six governorships away from the Republican opposition along with at least as many legislatures. On a state level, we can thank Sister Districts for their fine work. Check their website out for a complete list of their accomplishments this election.

October 31, 2018
Day 656 of 1461 days

Dear Co-defendants –

DOWN TO THE WIRE

We are, as the saying goes, five days and a wake-up from mid-term elections. Already, though, 21% of Oregon voters have cast ballots, compared to 14% at this point in the last primary election. Whether the resulting wave will be blue or purple lies within our power. If you have not yet voted, stop reading this, and go do it immediately. Be sure that all voting members of your family have cast ballots. Don’t be shy about asking like-minded friends and acquaintances if they have voted. This is the most portentous election that, we hope, we will ever see in this country. If there is to be a blue wave, you are the wave.

We have one final weekend for canvassing, going door-to-door asking people if they have voted. If you are a neighborhood leader, make one final push to get your selected group close to 100% participation in democracy. Canvassing remains the most effective way of getting out the vote, surpassing all other avenues – postcards, phone calls, texts.

Democracy practiced face-to-face yields the best results. Go for it.

AFTER THE ELECTION

Whichever way the election goes, even if it’s overwhelmingly blue, this is but a mid-term election. Trump stays in as president no matter how loudly we protest, how powerful our wave. So, we have to take a few days off, then regroup, and keep the resistance growing and going.

And, even if we do win one or more legislative chambers, we need to remember that we are dealing with a gangster administration that possesses little respect for the law. The administration may just ignore congressional subpoenas, may fail o appear at hearings, may thumb its nose at a Democratic congress exercising its constitutional powers. We in the progressive movement will need to keep our shoulders to the political wheel. There will be little cause for rest!

CHAPTER MEETINGS AND ELECTION NIGHT PARTY

Our club meeting for November will be moved to Tuesday, November 6th, same place, same time. But this is a celebratory meeting. Bring a pot-luck dish for all to share. The club will provide wine and softer-drinks for all comers, as well as plastic ware and disposable dishes.

Anticipating the need to kick back a bit to celebrate the holidays, the December meeting is cancelled and we well get set to ’fight the old fight’ again with a New Year’s January  meeting on Wednesday, January 9, 2019.
